[Travelogue] Tatto KL- Cozy up for some Classic Italian in Central KL

IMG_7989When you walk through the doors of Tatto, located on the ground level of the swanky Hampshire building, you’d first notice the extensive L-shaped bar that stretches far and beyond! Round the corner, sink into one of the cushy couches for pre or post dinner drinks. The huge dining room is spaciously set up. The ambience is trendy and relaxed at the same time. Staff are friendly and service is excellent, thanks to savvy lady owner, Yenti (She’s the one with the crown:-))IMG_7991Armed with years of experience in the food & beverage industry, Yenti is a delight… greeting you like she’d known you from primary school! Her eyes lit up as she shares enthusiastically her experiences and passion for her business, her food, her travels and her ideas. She’s warm and accommodating towards her clients and her staff. It’s no wonder her crew stand by her through the years! Tatto serves very classic Italian food. There’s no fancy, gimmicky, smokey effects emitting from your pasta. Nor is there anything fusion about the cooking. Just good old Italian fare in a comfy environment. Our dinner began with a special sharing antipasti arranged by Yenti.

The generous platter contained some flavorful sautéed prawns, delicious black angus beef carpaccio, a zesty salmon tartare, Italian classic Caprese with pesto and a succulent calamari dish. The chunky squid was cooked so tender and moist in a tomato based sauce… absolutely yummy! I chewed in glee until unsuspectingly biting into a tiny but fiery pepper stuffed in there🔥 Whoa! Took an entire Pellegrino and 20 good minutes to “put out the fire”!! I’m feather-light-weight when it comes to chilis and though I’d personally prefer not to have that pepper in my squid, I think it’s a bloody good idea as it gives hellava kick🌶 for’em chilli lovers out there!

Tatto boasts a good, wide range of appetizers and mains, from pizzas to pastas to meats and seafood. We had a split pizza of Smoked Salmon and Margherita; a Seafood Aglio Olio and the Pan Roast Sea Bass.IMG_8014Tatto’s thin crust pizza isn’t crispy the way I like.. However, the gooey melted cheese and tomato sauce did not soak through the thin tender base (which is a common disaster in thin crust pizzas🙁). This soft thin dough held up really well!IMG_8012Except for the slightly overcooked spaghetti, the clams, prawns, squid and mussels in the Seafood Aglio Olio were sweet and fresh. With a tinge of red dried chilli thrown in for a bit of heat. We didn’t, but do tell them how hard or soft you like your pasta when ordering to avoid disappointment.IMG_8008For me, the dish of the evening was clearly the Pan Roasted Sea Bass! I loved how it was expertly pan seared to a smokey crisp while remaining beautifully moist on the inside. The fillet flakes nicely without breaking. And it is flavored with a gorgeous spinach and sunflower seed sauce. Served with baby bok choy, a local vegetable, it’s crisp crunchiness was a perfect balance to the tender fish. If you’ve never been confident about fish, this will change you!img_7994Get seated up front and you might just miss the display chiller filled with the most decadent looking cakes round the other end of the bar. These cakes are all freshly made in-house. And though none of them scream Italian, trust me, you have to try one…or two?! Man, I couldn’t take my eyes of them and couldn’t wait til dessert time! We ordered 2 cakes and a Panna Cotta to share and secretly wished we had room for more!

The tart berries lifted the sweetness of the silky smooth Panna Cotta
IMG_8016What stole the show was the Chocolate Mocha Ganache. It’s a mousse, tort, cake and ganache rolled into one heavenly rich creamy bitter sweet chocolate gem! T’was a tall cake but we devoured it 😄 What a way to end the evening!

Like its name, Tatto, meaning “touch“, we’ve being touched enormously by the great service, food, wine, desserts and of course, Yenti’s hospitality! And naturally, no night out would be complete without some great company. This evening at Tatto was no exception!IMG_8086There’s never a dull moment when these two are around! Many thanks to the Degeses for showing us Tatto. To another 16 years of friendship, Saluti!
